Merzbacher Lake

The unique Mertzbacher Lake is located in the Central Tien Shan and is called "the disappearing lake" because it drains every year as the ice melts. It is the only lake in Kyrgyz Republic with such a phenomenon.

The glacier lake almost completely drains and is re-formed by glacier water two times a year. It is located at the altitude of 3304 m. The lake was named after a German explorer, Gottried Merzbacher, who led an expedition in the area in 1903.
